AFCON 2021: African Teams Who Failed To Qualify

The African Cup Nations and major tournament are not only festivals of football but also festivals of drama, shocks, surprises and unexpected results.

With a limited number of participating teams put at 24 teams, not all 54 member nations of CAF will participate.

This is, however, not limited to the minnows who don’t have the quality to overcome the big boys, the big boys themselves have had their fair share of sitting out of tournaments.

The bafana bafana of South Africa are the biggest teams missing from the AFCON roaster for 2021, their 1998 triumph remains their only title but in 2019 they were posted by Nigeria in the Quarter-final.

Pitted against Ghana, Sudan and São Tome en Principe, many would have expected South Africa to follow Ghana but Sudan had other plans and Sao Tome was stubborn as well.

It is the fourth tournament they will be missing in the last six AFCON.

DR Congo may not be one of Africa football’s biggest names but with 2 AFCON titles and proper representation at the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup, one would expect steady appearance at the AFCON.

The country missed three back to back editions from 2008 to 2012, the Congolese have been ever present finishing third in 2015.

Gambia, Gabon and Angola are not the toughest oppositions but DR Congo failed to move from that qualification group with Gambia making their debut.

Angola have been having a poor run in the past decade at the AFCON after only featuring once in the last three.

They were ever present since 2006 till 2013 but since then the southern Africans have not returned to their best at the AFCON.

Zambia

Despite being pitted against Algeria, Zimbabwe and Botswana, Zambia who are the 2013 Champions of the competition failed to qualify.

The copper bullets had the joint highest goalscorer in qualification Patson Daka who scored five goals and they were the joint highest scoring of the teams who didn’t qualify with 8 goals alongside Namibia.

The 2015 edition was the last time the Zambians featured at the AFCON despite having some of the exciting talents on the continent.
