Barcelona To Appeal Lionel Messi’s Ban After Super Cup Red Card

Barcelona playmaker, Lionel Messi has been banned for two games following his dismissal from the Super Cup defeat against Athletic Bilbao at the weekend.

But the Blaugrana club has revealed that they will appeal against the ban which was handed the Argentine by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

The 33-year old forward ended his 753rd appearance for Barcelona on a sad and regrettable note after swinging at Bilbao’s Aside Villalibre in the final seconds of the the match.

The incident was spotted by VAR and Messi was shown a red card afterwards, which was the first time in his Barcelona career.

Messi was lucky to have narrowly missed a suspension of four to twelve matches had the RFEF’s disciplinary committee described the incident as aggression.

Instead, it was tagged as ‘violence during play’, which is usually punished with a two to three-game ban.

The suspension however means that Messi would miss the last 32 tie of the Copa Del Rey at Cornela and this weekend’s trip to Elche in the LaLiga.

For the records, Messi has only been sent off twice in his career, both for Argentina – on his first appearance for the Albiceleste in 2005 against Hungary and in the 2019 Copa America third-place play off against Chile.
