Derided Ole And Manchester United Showing They Mean Business

Manchester United yet again showed their determination to challenge for the title last night after their 2-1 win over Aston Villa in a thoroughly entertaining game.

The win means that United are now levelled on points with the league leaders Liverpool following Fernandes’ penalty which put the game to bed against the stubborn Aston Villa side.

Anthony Martial had put Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side ahead shortly before half time but a Bertrand Traore’s calm finish canceled out Martial’s first half header just thirteen minutes after the break.

Just three minutes after Traore’s equalizer, Bruno Fernandes drilled into Martinez’s net his 11th league goal of the season – and his fifth from the spot – into the bottom corner to punish Douglas Luiz’s clip on Paul Pogba and hand United an eighth win in 10 games.

Meanwhile, Smith’s side were unfortunate not to have left Old Trafford with at least a point from the game having played fantastically well.

Can Manchester United And Ole Be Trusted?

Lately, Manchester United have displayed their resilience in grinding out points at Old Trafford and away from home. Also, they’ve exhibited willingness to go head-to-head with teams that are happy to open up the game and play to United’s strength.

Beating a much-improved Villa side took United’s current unbeaten run in the Premier League to 10 games. Eight of those games have been victories.

The only time United have been on a run of that length, with so many wins, since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 was when Solskjaer first took charge in 2018.

Without doubt, this recent fantabulous performance for United has resulted into a mouth-watering prospect of a rare match-up between them and Liverpool at Anfield on 17 January, when both can dream of title glory.

For United and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, derided, ridiculed and lambasted for the majority of his two years in charge, have got themselves into position of contention, almost when no-one was looking.

However, the only headache a section of Manchester United’s fans would have is if this blazing form of United would be sustainable; does the players at United have the mental and  physical strength to go as far as fighting for the title with the Kop?

Because for countless times, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s inability to manage matches (especially at the highest level) has been exposed to the world and it makes one wonder if this new found form of Manchester United could result to a nail-biting title contest between United and Liverpool.

As it stands, United are definitely not the finished article. There are players the Norwegian manager would be willing to sell this month for a start.  Trickier decisions need to be made about the future of players like Brandon Williams  and the future of Jesse Lingard.

No-one at United will say they are back ; But the doubts that have persisted so long are starting to disappear. Only time would tell how far they can go this season.
