Lionel Messi was crowned the winner of the ballon d or for the sixth time last night.

The Argentine beat Cristiano Ronaldo who was 3rd on the table, ahead the Senegalese star Sadio Mane.

He has now set a wonderful record, which is seeming impossible for anyone to break in years to come, after becoming the first player to win six Ballon d’ors.

This year it seems like a tough year for Cristiano Ronaldo, because he is no where competing for the title.

Van Dijk was the only contender with Lionel Messi, and he is looking like he will become the first Liverpool to win it since Owen in 2001.

After many people thought he deserves the award, he was completely grateful for being nominated alongside with the Argentine star Lionel Messi.

He said: “You need to respect greatness.  It was an amazing year — but there’s a couple of players who are a bit unnatural.

“I was close but there was someone a bit better.

“I never thought I’d be up for a Ballon d’Or until I was actually nominated.

“It shows a lot about how my career’s been. I came late but never gave up on my dreams.

“I had to work hard every step of the way so to be here makes me so proud.”

Cristiano Ronaldo also won the best player in LA Liga last night.

The award was in December 2nd 2019, and messi won his sixth award and the first since 2015 in France.
