It was an amazing weekend for Super Eagles stars in Europe last weekend as a couple of Nigerian players were pivotal for their respective club sides in Europe.
Most of the Nigerian stars represented their clubsides in the FA Cup in England while Cyril Dessers, Paul Onuachu Samuel Chukwueze et all played in league matches respectively.
In the French Ligue1, Samuel Kalu completed 47% of his dribbles in just 61 minutes played for his Bordeaux side in their 2-1 win against Lorient. While Josh Maja only played the lasted four minutes in the same match.
Samuel Chukwueze was the only Super Eagles star in action in the Spanish LaLiga. He came off the bench in the last 24 minutes as Villareal thrashed Celta Vigo 4-nil last Saturday. The 21-year old winger completed 33% of his dribbles in the game.
Nigerian left back in the Portuguese league, Zaidu Sanusi played the whole 90 minutes for Sérgio Conceição’s FC Porto side in their 4-1 win at Famalicao earning praise aplenty.
Sanusi was able to make 1 clearance, 2 interceptions and 3 tackles and also attempted 3 crosses and completed 75% of his dribbles.
Chidozie Awaziem captained his Boavista side but they were held to a 1-1 draw by Santa Clara. He made 4 clearances, 1 interception and 80% of his aerial duels.
In Belgium, Paul Onuachu rewarded his manager’s trust with an equalizer against Kortrijk to salvage the game for his Club Brugge side, taking his tally to 19 goals this season.
CyrielDessers on the other hand came off the bench and featured for 30 minutes in the same fixture. He’s scored 4 goals so far.
In the English FA Cup, Semi Ajayi played the full 120mins for West Brom in their crunchy 2-2 draw with Blackpool, scoring a second half equalizer to tie at 1-1. Ajayi, 27, made 2 clearances, 3 interceptions & won 62.5% of his aerial duels.
Ola Aina also played the whole of 120mins as Fulham beat QPR in Extra Time. He completed 68% of his dribbles and also recorded 3 clearances, 1 interception and 2 tackles.
Nigerian Players Scorecard
For Alex Iwobi, he only lasted 61minutes in Everton’s 2-1 win against Rotterdam, also in the FA Cup. Before he was substituted for Abdoulaye Docoure, he completed all his dribbles but Everton couldn’t win until after 120 minutes.
Meanwhile, the duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho were in action for Leicester City. Ndidi was solid in the middield as always, completing a staggering 90% of his long balls and 3 shots.
Kelechi Iheanacho was called upon eight minutes before stoppage time and this time, the damage had been done already even Mikel Obi was helpless for Stoke City. It ended 4-nil in favor of The Foxes.
Lastly, Willoam Troost Ekong played 76 minutes for Watford in their 1-0 loss at Old Trafford. He made 2 clearances and fired 2 shots, both off target, winning 50% of his aerial duels.
